Learn more about Willful

Does Willful suit my needs?

Willful may be a great option for a lot of Canadians. However, everyone’s estate planning needs are unique, and Willful’s products may not be right for you. You may benefit from speaking to a lawyer about the way you want to plan your will and your power of attorney.

How do I claim my free will?

Enter your CIBC email at the top of this page, agree to the terms, and click "Get My Free Will".

You will get an email to your CIBC address. Click on the link in the email to create your account with login credentials of your choice. Then, complete your will using our guided steps. Your free legal essentials will credit is automatically applied, and you can update your documents anytime for free.

Are wills made online legal in Canada?

Yes. A will made with a platform like Willful is legal in Canada. However, there are some steps that need to be taken in order for it to meet the criteria for a legal will in Canada. Each Willful will comes with detailed instructions for signing and witnessing so you can feel confident that you have a legally-valid will.

How does Willful work?

Willful is an online platform that guides you through creating a legally-valid will. Answer a few simple questions about your wishes, and in about 20 minutes, you’ll have a customized legal will. Then, simply print and sign with witnesses to make it legally valid. You can make unlimited changes anytime, for free.

More complex assets or family needs?

Willful may be a great fit for most Canadians, but some situations are more complex and require advice from an estate lawyer. For example, you may want to speak with a lawyer if:

  • You’re separated (but not divorced) and want to control how assets are passed on.
  • You need a trust, such as a Henson Trust or Life Interest Trust.
  • You want dual wills or to manage assets in multiple jurisdictions.
  • You’d like to exclude a spouse, child, or dependent from your will.
  • You want to add custom clauses, complex instructions, or “if this, then that” scenarios.
  • You’re choosing an executor who lives out of province/country, or you have significant foreign assets.

In these cases, a lawyer can help ensure your wishes are carried out properly and in line with the law. If you’re unsure whether Willful is right for you, our team is happy to help point you in the right direction.
